On Thursday, June 6, 2012 more than 75 people gathered at the Embassy of Chile in Washington DC to attend the Award Ceremony of the “Fourth Annual Finding Gabriela DC Youth Poetry Contest.” The steady and heavy rain did not the contest winners and their families and friends, from attending this important event.
On behalf of the Board of the Gabriela Mistral Foundation I want to thank you for your support and interest in the Humanitarian Mission to Chile of International Surgical Mission Support which was done in collaboration of our Foundation. I was asked to handle this project on behalf of the Foundation.I should like to take a moment to share with you some details about the Mission which gave me the privilege of being with an outstanding group of human beings-- the members of Team NY of ISMS-- during the mission to Chile.
During the month of Gabriela, the Gabriela Mistral Foundation Delivers
Donation of Reading Glasses
Continuing with our mission to promote reading in Chile, in a special project with Fundacion Habia Una Vez in Chile, the Gabriela Mistral Foundation has delivered 200 reading glasses of different strenghts to Chile. The reading glasses were delivered to the offices of Fundacion Habia Una Vez in Santiago on April 15, 2013.
Continuing with the legacy of Gabriela Mistral and our mission, the GabrielaMistral Foundation in alliance with FundacionHabia una Vez will deliver five ”Rincones Mistralianos” in the communities of: Guayacan, Los Andes, Peñalolen, Villarica y Museo de Valparaiso. Delivery of all the “Rincones Mistralianos” will be completed by mid-June 2013.
Donation of Medical Equipment to Hospital de Curanilahue and Medicos del Aire
In December 2012, the Gabriela Mistral Foundation received a request from Medicos del Aire, a humanitarian medical group from Concepcion. The group, a volunteer organization, was formed after the 2010 earthquake, in order to provide much needed medical care -consultations- to people in need living in remote areas who are not able to travel to the city to see a doctor. Humanitarian Mission to Chile will provide urgently needed surgeries to over 100 children and adults
On February 28, 2012, over 200 friends of International Surgery Mission Support, Team NY and the Gabriela Mistral Foundation gathered at the Fletcher Sinclair Mansion in New York for the ISMS Winter Fundraiser to benefit the upcoming April 2013 Mission to Chile.
The highlight of the evening was a special message of congratulations and support sent for this occasion by Mrs. Cecilia Morel, First Lady of Chile. The event included remarks by Dr. Ravi Kothuru and Dr. Medhat Allam, founders of ISMS; Ambassador Octavio Errazuriz, Permanent Representative of Chile to the United Nations and Mrs. Gloria Garafuich-Grabois on behalf of the Gabriela Mistral Foundation.
